Jesus was called a Nazarene because his boyhood home was in the town of Nazareth. The earliest followers of Jesus were called Nazarenes.
The Nazarene denomination started in 1908. Jesus did not found any denomination, but we bear the name “Nazarene” to identify ourselves with His mission to reach all people regardless of their race, social status, or religious background.
The Nazarene church is known as a “holiness” church. That simply means that our goal as His followers is to become like Jesus in our actions, words, thoughts, and inner character. Everything we do as a church is intended to help produce Christ-like disciples in the world.
